The new academy hopes to transform and revolutionize education in Africa through its emphasis on discipline, leadership, science and technology, and through partnerships with African and global companies.
24 October 2013- Pretoria, South Africa- The Aerospace Leadership Academy (AERLA), an African first, has proudly been launched today.
The Academy is a private, university preparatory American boarding high school for boys and girls located approximately 80km from Pretoria and Johannesburg on 90 acres in the majestic Magliesberg mountain range. AERLA develops leadership and strong character through an air force military model. The first cohort of students will arrive in August 2014, with AERLA based on the northern hemisphere school calendar.
“AERLA can best be summed up by its motto: Tradition, Transformation, Education,” said the AERLA Director of Public Engagement Dr Scott Firsing. Moreover, AERLA’s South African location is unique because it is a country known for innovation: “from the first human heart transplant and developing its own nuclear bomb to the V shaped hull in armored personnel vehicles and the Rooivalk Attack Helicopter,” said Dr Firsing.
“We understand the importance of engineering to South Africa, but Africa as a whole. Everything from water, sanitation, power, food and overall general infrastructure requires educated engineers. AERLA will help fill that void on the continent,” added Firsing.
How will it do this? In addition to hiring the best teachers: “AERLA will utilize and partner with both South African and global aeronautical, defense and engineering companies, to provide our students with the best educational and training experience possible,“ stated Dr Ken Baucom, founder and director of AERLA .
Although the Academy focuses on state of the art aerospace engineering and IT, it will not ignore the other key areas such as English, especially writing and general communication skills.
