Abel Garwe- Abel has 14 years of experience in teaching Physical Sciences in both South Africa and Zimbabwe. He was recently appointed as a NASA Space Camp Ambassador, having participated in the Rocket and Space Science program in the USA.
Abel holds a BSc Degree with majors in Physics and Mathematics as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Education. He was previously engaged as a Science Specialist at Osizweni Education and Development Centre in Secunda, Mpumalanga. His educational intervention activities and programs consist of a multi-faceted approach to effective teaching and learning in sciences at both GET and FET bands such as conducting Physical Sciences prescribed experiments, Educator Training Workshops, Science shows, enrichment, consolidation and revision classes during school visits and Mobile Laboratory outreaches. He is also involved in the Science Center interactive exhibitions, technology education, career guidance and applications for bursaries and tertiary education.
Bronwyn du Rand- Bronwyn, who spend a good portion of her childhood in Hekpoort, is the AERLA Community Engagement Officer. Bronwyn has worked in both non-profit and cooperate environments and has spent the last four years as the Community Engagement Coordinator at Monash University, South Africa. Bronwyn is passionate about creating access to quality education for communities through mutually beneficial partnerships. By engaging in community projects the AERLA students will not only have the opportunity to make a difference, they will also develop critical life skills and become better leaders.
Bronwyn will help coordinate all of our community engagement projects, encourage volunteerism, train our student run organisations, and look for networking opportunities for the AERLA students. She will also assist with fundraising and events.
Naomi Manzira- Naomi, an American, is our aviation teacher joining AERLA after working for South African Airways in Florida. She is a graduate of Embry Riddle Aeronautical University with a degree in Aeronautics and is currently doing her MBA in Aviation through Embry Riddle Worldwide. Her course work to date has involved two years of aerospace engineering and aviation courses regulated and overseen by the US Federal Aviation Administration.
Naomi has served as a cadet Commander in both the U.S Civil Air Patrol and the U.S. Air Force JROTC programs with experience in aerospace studies, drill, PT, emergency services training, and other US military traditions. She has also coached sports programs at high school level (lacrosse).
Yasmin Van Deventer (nee Al-Turk)- Yasmin assists in a wide range of activities at AERLA, but spends the majority of her time on curriculum development due to extensive mathematics/engineering education and experience.
Yasmin is originally from Jordan and travelled a lot due to her father being an ambassador, which enhanced her knowledge of other cultures. As a student, she showed exceptional ability in the rigorous side of mathematics so she decided to pursue engineering studies. Yasmin was granted a scholarship from the University of La Verne (Athens), but studied at the University of Montpellier II in Southern France and in Jordan, earning a BSc in Mechatronics Engineering. She was presented with an award for her final year project before she came to settle in South Africa to complete a Master’s degree in Technology Management at the University of Pretoria.
Before joining AERLA, Yasmin worked in the military and defence industry.
